Are you considering 'going green'? Do you feel as though your one piece of help isn't doing enough? Well quite on the contrary, even the smallest of actions can have a lasting effect on the safety and sustainability on the environment.
Going Green at home is the first step in the right direction. And going green in the home is the best way to expose younger generations on how to do so, so the environment can still be there for them to enjoy in the future. And all the hype about 'going green' has a lot of people concerned, but the long term effects of going green should be your incentive to do so.
Here are just a few simple ways to to start you off on your journey of 'going green':
- Use less electricity, that may seem simple, but it can be one of the most important pointers in looking after the environment. It's a hard switch, but next time you see a light bulb out, switch to compact fluorescent bulbs. They are somewhat more expensive than the regular bulbs, but they seventy-five percent of you energy use and last up to ten times longer than regular bulbs. Thus in the end you will be saving money on your electric bill. Not to mention you will be helping to save the environment with this one simple step.
- Only run your dishwasher, washer and dryer when you have full loads. You reduce both the electricity it takes to run each of the household appliance, and it will also reduce water usage, and as we know the environment can use all of the water it can get.
- Install a low-flow shower head. Again by doing so you will reducing your water consumption by half. These low-flow shower heads are even innovative enough that they still produce a strong stream of water pressure.
- Another way to suit the environment in regards to the water issue, is to retrofit your hot-water heater system with a hot-water circulation pump. So instead of running the water waiting for it to get warm, it will get warm almost instantly.
- If you're considering giving your house a face lift, chose Zero VOC paints for your next decorating project. Regular paints emit fumes that are not healthy for any member of your family nor the environment.
- If you are trying to improve your in-home air quality or trying to save the environment from the fumes of any household projects. Look for furnishings (indoor or outdoor) that are made without glue or formaldehyde. They emit harsh toxins into the environment and are not healthy for anyone in your family.
- To help the environment, next time you get rid of the trash, follow the three 'Rs': Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. Reduce the amount of stuff you send to the landfill, reuse the things that you can, and Recycle! Very rarely will you find a town that does not have a recycling center. So collect all your papers, cans, glass, etc. and bring them to your local recycling center.
These are the first steps in going green. And the more you instill the traditions of going green the longer lasting effects you will see in your kids as well as their want to help the environment as well.
You many not see the long-term effects of going green, but the generations ahead of you will most certainly benefit from the little things you do today.
