If you have kids, they probably hear a lot about the scary things that their generation might be faced with in regards to the environment. They are the ones that are going to make the decisions that will effect the future of this planet. So why not raise them to be environmentally conscious.
We have very much so become more aware of the global climate crisis that has all of a sudden been thrown in our faces. Many experts feel that we must start educating our kids to be environmentally conscious consumers. And maybe by teaching, you could learn something along the way.
The way you can teach your children is completely up to you. But, it can be as simple as taking them on a walk through the woods, so they can see nature first hand. Or maybe if that doesn't work as well as you had hoped, you can run a major recycling project in your neighborhood. Both are simple, but so very helpful in getting your child to be more environmentally conscious.
One of the most important things for a child to see, is that you too are making an effort to be environmentally conscious. You must show that you care for nature and that it is there for you to enjoy. But in order for it to be there to enjoy, you must care for it.
As a parent you can lead by example, you can recycle, you can use your energy responsibly, and you can care for nature in that you plant something every so once in a while. Also, to help nature show them that reusing items and products is also a smart way to be environmentally conscious. All of these small things will make it seem simple to your child, thus they will be more willing to do so as well.
Involve your kids in all the environmentally conscious decisions of the household. Explain to your kids what all the big scary words mean.
What does energy conservation mean, what is global warming, what is climate change? All questions that you can find together, another way to teach them! It may seem simple, but make sure they understand the importance of each of the terms as well as how you can apply them to the household. It can even coming down to making sure they turn off the lights as you leave a room.
Go outside and experience nature. And so what you don't live in the country, outside is outside! Nature walks are a great way for kids to get in touch with the environment, and its a good way for you to spend time together too! On your walk, explain to them that nature is there to help us, but we have to help it fist. You can even take it a step further, bring a recycling bag with you and pick up stray pieces of trash. It would be hard not to be environmentally conscious if you were to take care of nature like that.
Set up a recycling station in your house. Make sure your kids know where it is, and make sure they know how to divide it up; paper, glass, soda cans, and plastic. This may seem chore-like to them, but remind them how much of an impact you will have on nature if you take an extra minute of two to recycle. Try and not use any paper cups, reduce the number of disposable items you use, that can help you reduce the amount of garbage you accumulate per week. And if you apply this to your household, the kids should want to follow suit and continue to be environmentally conscious.
Outside of the household, one way to be environmentally conscious is to bring your reusable shopping bags. In fact that is a small enough task where you can make that your child's job any time you go shopping.
And lastly get involved with your community! Check your local newspaper and find programs that may let your child tour a recycling facility, or maybe you can find a nature walk geared towards you child's age group. Zoo's sometimes have nature centers in which your children will be educated on the positive effects they can have on the environment if they too are more environmentally conscious.
